The Best Ways To Prevent Skin Cancer
Minimize sun exposure, especially during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. when the sun's rays are the most intense (11:00 to 4:00 during daylight-saving time).
Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently when outdoors and use an SPF of at least 15, even on cloudy days (80% of the sun's rays penetrate the clouds). Use broad-spectrum sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB. Email us for the best ones.
Wear appropriate clothing during prolonged periods in the sun including a wide brim hat (not a cap!).
Beware of reflective surfaces since sand, snow, concrete, or water can reflect up to 85% of the sun's rays.
Avoid tanning parlors and sun lamps since more and more wavelengths have been associated with premature aging and increasing risks of skin cancer.
Protect children by teaching them the safe rules of sun exposure, using sunscreens, and using appropriate clothing since the majority of damage from the sun occurs before the age of 20 and one or two blistering childhood sunburns can double the risk of malignant melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer.
